Approved Canadian affiliates can earn 13% commission on sales of appliance parts and accessories each month in Canada through the new APWagner.ca Affiliate Marketing Program.

Canadian webmasters and bloggers who provide appliance repair and appliance-related information on their site are invited to join APWagner.ca’s Affiliate Marketing Program which is run through the LinkConnector.com Affiliate Network.

After applying and being approved, download and place APWagner.ca banner ads, links, coupons and search boxes to your site. Each time a person clicks on one of APWagner.ca’s ads from your site and purchases something from the APWagner.ca Website, you earn a portion of that sale depending on your commission rate. Commission rates ranging from 11% - 13% are offered and vary based on the total amount of sales for the month generated through Apwagner.ca Ads on your site. The more you sell -- the higher commission you earn and the more money you receive.

In addition to attractive commission rates, the program also offers affiliates a 90-day sale cookie duration. This means that if a user visits the APWagner.ca Website through an ad placed on your web site and, in 89 days, returns to APWager.com to make a purchase, you will receive a commission for that sale.

Canadian and U.S. based web sites and bloggers who provide web users with valuable, original, and well-written content about appliance repair, appliances, and home improvement projects are encouraged to join.

GE introduces household energy monitoring and energy producing system

  • Jul 15, 2009
  • Post a comment

General Electric is working on developing a home based system that not only monitors electricity, but also produces its own energy via solar panels and energy storage products.

The system is called "Net Zero Energy Home," because it could possibly cost consumers “zero dollars” to power their home, so long as they heed the advice of smart meters and utilize the power produced by their own solar panels, which will be part of the package.

The system is made up of energy efficient lighting and appliances, along with energy management systems and renewable power generators. Installed smart meters will tell you how much the energy you use is costing you in real time, so you can decide if you really want to run that load of laundry now, or when energy rates go down.

Currently, home owners only know how much energy is costing them at the end of the month when their utility bill arrives.  With a smart meter consumers could see energy rates in “real time” and would be able to adjust their energy usage accordingly.

Homeowners could also generate energy using products such as solar photovoltaic panels, small wind turbines and flexible thin film solar panels.

General Electric hopes to introduce the home energy management system to consumers in 2015.

15 tips to go green and save money

  • May 27, 2009
  • Post a comment

Now is a good time to put some energy and Earth-saving tips into practice. Not only will these tips help the Earth by saving energy, it will also help you save money by cutting your utility bills. These are small, simple changes that everyone can do.

1. Turn off the faucet while brushing your teeth. Faucets spit out at least 2 gallons of water a minute. So each person who runs the faucet while brushing twice a day is estimated to waste about 8 gallons of water, according to an article from the Middletown Journal.

2. Ditch the water bottle, install a water filter instead.  Install a refrigerator, faucet, or undersink water filter and skip the bottle.  In 2006, nearly 38 million disposable plastic water bottles ended up in landfills according to the Website Earth911.com.  Not only do plastic water bottles fill our landfills, they also require petroleum to be produced.

Sign up for a water filter subscription, and new replacement water filters will be sent to you in the mail when you need them.

3. Always run your dishwasher and washing machine on full loads.

4. Turn off the drying cycle on your dishwasher and let the dishes air dry.

5. Hand your laundry out to dry instead of using the dryer.

6. Fix your leaky faucets by replacing worn out washers. If you think dripping faucets are not costing you much, check out the water drip calculator from the United States Geological Survey Website. The water drip calculator provides an estimate on how much water you are wasting due to leaky faucets.

7. Check your refrigerator door gasket for leaks. Your gasket is the rubber-like strip surrounding the door of your refrigerator. It helps to keep cold air inside your refrigerator. Cracked or broken gaskets should be replaced, as cold air can seep out.

8. Clean your refrigerator’s condenser coils. Clean coils help your refrigerator run more efficiently, saving you money.

9. Clean your clothes dryer’s vent work. The exhaust for your dryer becomes stuffed with lint over time. Not only does this make your dryer work harder, it also takes your clothes longer to dry, and could possibly lead to a fire.

10. Install a hot water dispenser. If you drink hot beverages a lot, a hot water dispenser could save you some money. A hot water dispenser uses an insulated hot water tank under the countertop, so very little energy is lost to the surrounding environment.  It also uses less energy because it does not cool incoming water from the water line; it keeps a reserve amount of hot water in its tank.

11. Limit the time the stove/oven is used during the summer months to help keep you cool.

12. Recycle your old appliances. Check with the company that collects your garbage to see if they offer any recycling programs. Some disposers will also pick up your appliances for free.

13. Buy an energy-efficient appliance. Even though it will cost you money up front, you will receive savings down the line in terms of electric, gas and water bills. Some utility companies are also offering “rebates” to customers who buy qualified energy-efficient appliances. Check with your utility company.

14. Unplug unused electronics. Plugged in electronics that are not in use, still consume some energy called “vampire power”. Purchase a Kill-A-Watt energy strip that automatically turns itself off.

15.   Install a rain water barrel to catch water runoff from your gutter. A plastic barrel with a spigot at the bottom will allow you to use the barrel-water to water your lawn and flowers, or to clean your driveway.

For more tips, read the Middletown Journal’s story on 99 tips on things you can do to help save the planet.

QotD: Going Greener

  • Apr 24, 2009

How could you better “green” your life? What’s holding you back?
Sponsored by One Million Acts of Green brought to you by Cisco.

For me personally, collecting all the plastic bags that I pick up from various stores and recycling them, would be one green thing I could do in addition to my other green activities. The supermarket in my town has a box set up for recycling plastic bags. I already started collecting them and will take them on my trip when I recycle my bottles.

I already recycle any soft drink bottles (for the deposit). I only drink filtered water from the tap and not bottled water.  if I am at an event and given bottled water to drink, I take the bottle home to make sure it is properly recycled, so it does not end up in a landfill.

I do not litter and I am amazed at how people feel they can throw their used cigarette butts on the ground and they do not consider that littering. I have cleaned a local park and found so many cigarette butts --the number was just staggering.

I have volunteered for local clean up projects where I live. It's a great work out, you meet fun, friendly people, and you are doing something good at the same time. I remember my group pulled some crazy things out of the lake at my local park. One was a huge election sign! I wanted it to go back to the candidate who was on the sign, so HE could recycle it. We also pulled out tires, tons of plastic bags, a stroller, water bottles and the typical trash you expect to find at public parks.

So those are my "green contributions." I know so many people that are realizing they can have an impact on the environment and are taking steps to help out. One friend now bikes to work. Another friend, a new mom, uses only  clothe diapers. Countless people I know have ditched plastic bags altogether and use their own canvas shopping bags.

I believe even small changes like these matter and  when you multiply that by millions of people, the outcome can be enormous.

Ways to conserve water in the home and save money

  • Apr 14, 2009
  • Post a comment

Fix your leaky faucets

Replace worn out washers on your sink faucets to stop water leaks. If you think dripping faucets are not costing you much, check out the water drip calculator from the United States Geological Survey Website. The water drip calculator provides an estimate on how much water you are wasting due leaky faucets.

Check with your water company for rebates and free products

Some utility companies are now offering rebates for the purchase of energy-efficient appliances like washing machines. Some even offer free products like low-flow shower heads or dye tablets that will help you detect water leaks from your toilet.

Here are some water-conservation rebates and products available to residents of Alameda and Contra Costa counties in San Francisco made available through The East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD).

Stop buying bottled water and use filtered water instead

Using water filters not only saves money, it reduces landfill waste as well.  In 2006 nearly 38 million disposable plastic water bottles ended up in landfills according to the Website Earth911.com.

Using a Whirlpool refrigerator water filter is not only more economical, it’s also more environmentally friendly.   Be sure to keep track of when you need to change your water filter with the help of a calendar. Better still, sign up for a water filter subscription, and new replacement water filters will be sent to you in the mail when you need them.

Run a full load in your washer and dishwasher

Always run your dishwasher and washing machine on full loads. For extra savings, turn off the drying cycle on your dishwasher and let the dishes air dry.

For extra savings on your laundry, hang a clothes line and use the power of the sun to dry your clothes. Not only is it more economical, but it helps prevent wear on your clothes, is a great form of exercise, and the smell of outdoors, line-dried laundry can’t be beat.

The hazard stems from the wiring in the rear of the ranges overheating. GE is aware of 47 reports of overheated wiring, including 33 reports of wiring that caught fire. Of these, one fire caused structural damage to the home. There are 14 reports of minor property damage and no injuries have been reported.

What to do if your burners do not work on your gas stove

  • Apr 1, 2009
  • Post a comment

Make sure you have turned the knob to the light position first. Then turn the knob to the desired heat setting after you have a flame. If you have recently cleaned your range, are you sure everything is dry? Moisture may prevent the electric ignition from working properly. If you hear clicking when the burner is supposed to be off, make sure the knob is turned all the way to off, and that the knob has popped out.

Gas Range burners are round and have small holes evenly placed around their perimeter. This appliance part is also sometimes referred to as a Gas burner grate. The holes around the

Gas Range Burners aka Gas burner grate

perimeter allow gas to flow out and create a controlled flame when lit. Sometimes the gas orifices get plugged and the gas can’t get through to be ignited. The trick is to clean them without making the holes any bigger. You need to clean the burners thoroughly. Many people use a toothpick, old toothbrush, or a small pin to clear the holes, allowing the gas to flow freely. If, after cleaning the burners, they still don't light, you should call a professional appliance repair person.

Sometimes ranges have different size burners on them. If you have recently cleaned the burners, it is possible you put a small burner cap on the large burner, or vice versa. You should double check to make sure that the correct gas range parts are in the correct place. If this isn't the problem, and make sure they are seated properly.

For more information on how to repair or fix your own gas range burner, gas cooktop, gas stove or gas oven by purchasing the needed appliance parts online, visit www.apwagner.com.
